Canine Behavioral Consultant Hurricane Katrina Rescues
When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, more than 300,000
people were made homeless. As a result, there are now more that 50,000
homeless pets. Shelters and Rescue organizations throughout the country
have pitched in to find homes for them, and many individuals are
providing foster care.
Cynthia McCollum and several other volunteers agreed to foster some dogs
in loving homes, until a permanent home can be found. We teamed up with
Sanctuary Animal Refuge, a no kill shelter
in South Florida. We brought back 4 dogs. One is in his permanent home,
one is in a long term foster and two are now looking for their forever
homes.
"Ruby"
Ruby was rescued from a damaged shelter in Gulfport MS after Katrina.
Her owner’s home and job were destroyed in the storm and they had no option but to give
her up. When we got her she was severely underweight and had horrible kennel cough.
We weren’t sure she would live. Ruby had a litter of puppies right before Katrina and
all her babies died in the storm
Ruby is a purebred American Pit Bull Terrier. She is about 2 years old. Her kennel
cough is cured and she is gaining weight. She is a very sweet and well mannered dog,
housetrained and good with people and other dogs. She is too intense for cats.
Ruby is heartworm positive and needs to be spayed. A private donor will be funding
her heartworm treatment, so all that is needed is a loving home where Ruby will be a
house dog. She will need a fenced yard for potty and play. Children must be over 12.
This is a really nice dog who wants nothing more than to curl up on the couch with her head in your lap.
"Harley"
Harley is a neutered male lab/chow mix about 1 year old. He got his coat
from the chow, but got his temperament from the lab. Harley came through
the disaster unaffected. He is happy go lucky, playful and a bit rowdy.
Harley needs to be seen by a vet for vaccines and worming. Harley is
crate trained and housetrained. He will need a fenced yard for exercise,
but should be a mostly indoor dog. Harley is too rowdy for small
children, so kids must be over 12. He is also to rowdy for older dogs,
but plays well with younger dogs. We are looking for an active family for
his forever home.
