My Philosophy
Why Train Your Dog
Imagine getting a new job and going in the first morning. They sit you down at a desk
and tell you No, don’t do that. You try again. And again they tell you No, don’t do that.
No, don’t do that. No, don’t do that. No one ever tells you what your real duties are and
it is up to you to figure it out. I don’t know about you, but I’d give up very quickly.
And yet, this is how we expect our dogs to learn the house rules. Screaming and hitting
may scare the dog, but they will not ever teach the dog what it is you do expect. And while
everyone needs to know what No means, as a teaching method it just doesn’t work.
Dogs can’t figure out for themselves what the house rules are. We need to teach them.
Your rules are your rules, unique to your household and lifestyle, but the dog needs to
be taught what is expected. She needs to be taught How To behave appropriately using
prevention, direction and positive reinforcement.
The biggest problem between humans and dogs is that we speak different languages.
Dogs hear us speaking like we hear someone speaking rapidly in another language.
In training I will teach you to speak and understand some Dog and the dog to understand
some human.
Dog Training allows you to establish reasonable rules, teach the dog expected behaviors
and customize to your unique needs, schedule and lifestyle. We all want our dogs to be
housetrained, to greet people without jumping up, to chew only on toys, to walk on a loose
lead, come when called, to be well mannered and obedient. This takes planning and a
coordinated effort from your trainer and your family.
Training will define your needs and goals, and then practice those behaviors the dog needs
to succeed in your family, teaching positive options for negative behaviors. Goals are
quickly met. Frustration is banished in favor of a dog who knows what to do and starts
volunteering good behavior. Dogs really do want to please us once they know the rules.
